Flava Flave Style?

By Brandi M. Seals

Trends are always coming and going. It seems like things are circular and nothing new is ever really made. Instead it is usually just an old idea that has been updated a bit and set out as something new. There is a new trend out there trying to get off the ground. Everyone take a moment and prepare to hear about this supposedly hot new trend: clocks on a chain.

The other day I saw something that I never thought I would see - clocks on a chain a la Flava Flav style. That is right, they are out there just waiting to be purchased and worn around town. I have to admit I never saw this one coming. I am usually a pretty good judge of bad trends that get picked up, but the clock around the neck was an extreme long shot.

I remember when Flava Flav was originally popular for rapping. He sported the giant clocks back then and while a few people tried to copy this trend, it pretty much just stayed with Flava Flav.

Now he is back and determined to pollute the airwaves with Flava of Love. I know Flava Flav has his nasty little show where women are demeaned and act like trashy prostitutes, but I did not think that would be enough for any of his "trends" to catch on. Maybe I am not that in tune with the youth of America anymore. Maybe men can no longer remember a girl's name and gives her a stupid nickname instead. Maybe women do not mind being treated like prostitutes. Maybe all women want to wear skimpy clothes and paw a scrawny thin man who kind of had a music career in the 80s. Somehow I just do not see it. I do not see the allure of Flava Flav.

Originally I did not have a problem with Flava Flav. I was not a fan of his music and he wore bad clothes but he never did anything that down right pissed me off. Now with Flava of Love, I cannot even see why anyone would want to be around this joke of a man. He is scrawny, weird, demeaning, and downright obnoxious. Yet that seems to be what people want to see on T.V.

Since I have talked so much about Flava Flav you are probably worried that the clocks that are in style now are huge. Do not be, they seem to be only an idea taken from Flava Flav’s unique style. The clocks available now are dainty little pieces on chains. Maybe it is the look of the future. I have not seen anyone trying to sell the large tacky clocks yet but you never know. Even if they do not sell the giant clocks, that may not stop it from catching on. Who knows, give it time and your teenager might head outdoors with an alarm clock strapped to his chest.

I do not really understand the appeal of the clock on a chain? Is it cool because everyone who passes by can easily see what time it is? If you already own a watch, you really do not need a clock on a necklace.

I guess this new trend just proves that you never know what people will come up with next. On one hand this could be a completely new idea, on the other hand it could be a shout out to the tacky stylings of Flava Flav. If the person who came up with this had never seen Flava Flav or he did not factor into the design at all, then it is not really that bad. It would just be a trend I would opt to avoid.

I think I am on to something here. If I did not immediately associate this new item with Flava Flav it would not be so bad. I used to have a watch that clipped to my belt loops. That did not bother me and it kind of followed the same principle - a non traditional watch that faces outward rather than inward so that it can be easily seen by the person wearing it. I loved it and I was sad when it eventually broke.
