Surf-wear

The sunbleached, the sandy, the ones riding the big waves -- the surfers -- influence summer fashions year after year. Since the 1950s surfers have been at the cutting edge of casual summer wear. Their comfortable shorts, tees and other attire have been adopted by anyone trying to create a comfortable beachwear feel. Learn the essential surfwear that will be in everyone's summer wardrobe this year.

Footwear
Thongs: No, not that kind. Thongs, also known as flip-flops are classic beach footwear. They are waterproof, easy to slip on and off and let the sand slide on through.

Water shoes: Perfect for protecting the feet on hot sand or slippery rocks, water shoes are now a must have for beach-going kids around the world.

Huaraches: Originally from Mexico, huaraches are the flexible and comfortable after-surf sandals for the "dressed up" surfer. Wear them to down margaritas as the sun sets.

Shorts
Long surf shorts: Long surf shorts are the most recognized icon of surfer clothing. They generally hit just below the knee and are most commonly decorated in wild print fabric. Real surf shorts offset the pockets so surfers don't have to sit on anything they have stashed.

Board shorts: Board shorts are a little shorter than the long shorts and are commonly of quick dry fabric. Board shorts often sport adjustable tie-waists and Velcro closures.

Tops
Classic tee: The classic tee shirt is the most common top worn by surfers -- second only to the bare chest for guys and the bikini top for girls. Tees can be solid color, but usually have surf logos or motifs on them; surf competition tees are always popular.

Tanks: Tank tops are easy to shrug into and say "summer" for most people. The surfer who cannot stand to don real clothing usually opts for the tank.

Bikini tops: The girl surfer layers her bikini top under her tee. Her bikini top is sexy but sturdy since she doesn't want it to fall off when she takes off her wet suit. She may wear just her bikini and board shorts when she is just hanging out.
